Director Peter Farrelly (Green Book) is in talks with Apple Studios to finance his upcoming film The Greatest Beer Run Ever. According to Deadline, it has been confirmed that actors Zac Efron and Russell Crowe are in talks to star, while Bill Murray will be in a supporting role.
The film is based off of the bestselling novel The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War, written by Chick Donahue and J.T. Malloy. The book is a memoir of an Irish-American New Yorker named Chick and a former U.S. marine who go on a courageous and unpredictable scheme to deliver beer to Chick’s friends, who were serving Vietnam in the late 1960s. Their crazy adventure includes hitching a ride on a Merchant Marine ship and carrying the beer through the jungle, all while dressed in shorts and Hawaiian shirts. Zac Efron is set to play Donohue, while Crowe is said to portray the U.S. marine.
Farrelly co-wrote the script with Brian Currie and Pete Jones, and the film will be produced by Andrew Muscato and Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.
Efron is currently shooting Season 2 of Down to Earth for Netflix, and he is also set to headline the Firestarter Remake for Blumhouse and Universal. Russell Crowe is coming off the film Unhinged. The Greatest Beer Run Ever is said to begin production in August, most likely in New Zealand or Australia.
