Deadline reports Showtime series Yellowjackets breakout star Sophie Thatcher will star in 20th Century Studio’s adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, The Boogeyman.
Thatcher is coming off her star-making role as Natalie in Yellowjackets and recently appeared as a cyborg gang member in The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+.
Horror director Rob Savage will direct with 21 Laps producing. 21 Laps was originally developing as a Fox film but has seen new life at Hulu after Fox’s merger with Disney in 2019. The release date is unknown.
The Boogeyman was released in 1978 as a part of The Night Shift collection of short stories, which King wrote for magazines. They were all curated into an anthology and published the year after The Shining was a massive success. This will be the 10th story developed into a feature film, including Children of the Corn, Maximum Overdrive, The Mangler, and Sometimes They Come Back.
The original short story took place in a psychiatrist’s office where a troubled man recounts the mysterious deaths of his children and how he believes the Boogeyman to be responsible.
Deadline shares a synopsis of this adaptation:
“The story follows a teenage girl who’s still reeling from the tragic death of their mother and finds herself and her brother plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggling to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.”
Black Swan scribe Mark Heyman will write the final script based on Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Akela Cooper’s original draft.
Production is expected to start this month.
