Yalitza Aparicio Finds Next Role in ‘Presences’

After nearly three years, Yalitza Aparicio, has finally gotten a new role. Aparicio came to fame with three-time Oscar-winning drama Roma directed by Alfonso Cuaron. From schoolteacher to starring in Roma, she became the first Mexican woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars in 14 years and the first Indigenous woman in history.

Aparicio will be starring in Presences, a horror film from Innocent Voices director Luis Mandoki. The star of Hell and Herod’s Law Damián Alcázar will also be starring in the movie. The film will tell the story of a man who loses his wife and goes to isolate himself in a cabin in the woods where strange things begin to happen.  According to El Universal, production kicked off this week in Tlalpujahua, located in central Mexico, and cast and crew are under strict coronavirus safety guidelines.

Although the Roma star has not worked on a set for the past three years, Aparicio remained busy supporting Indigenous filmmakers in Mexico. The actress has also teamed up with projects such as Cine Too to help marginalized communities access cinema. Cine Too is a one-screen, 75-seat cinema in Guelatao de Juárez, Oaxaca that serves as an educational center for the next generation of Indigenous filmmakers.
