Is there trouble in the land of X-Men spinoffs? The Hollywood Reporter details rumblings behind the scenes at 20th Century Fox, where they are “going 100 miles per hour” on as many X-Men properties as you can shake a silver surfboard at. While executives repeat claims that the upcoming $52.4 billion merger with Disney will not affect current projects, filmmakers at Fox are rightfully concerned that their movies may not fit snugly into the PG-13 world of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Still, there’s not much they can do other than focus on work. Rumor has it that there are Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom spinoffs in pre-production. Doctor Doom would be particularly susceptible to Disney interference, as Doom would be a likely candidate for the main villain in future Avengers films (assuming the merger happens).
Fox also has an unnamed project in the works with Brian Michael Bendis and Deadpool director Tim Miller, a Channing Tatum Gambit movie that seems to be stuck in development hell, whopping six X-Men movies planned for 2019 and 2020, and a Deadpool spinoff called X-Force. Plus, The Untitled Deadpool Sequel hits theaters on May 18th, X-Men: Dark Phoenix lands on November 2nd, and an X-Men spinoff called New Mutants comes out on February 22nd, 2019.
Speaking of the horror-centric New Mutants, it will undergo reshoots this summer with the intention of adding a new character into the film. Over at comicbook.com there is speculation that the new character could be shape-shifter Warlock, or possibly Kitty Pryde as way to introduce her character before her solo film.
What do you think of all of these X-Men movies? Is Fox going to give you superhero-movie fatigue, or are you craving more movies that feature lesser-known characters? Let us know in the comments below.
