‘X-Men’ Spinoff ‘New Mutants’ Casts Leads Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams

Filming on the X-Men spinoff New Mutants begins in July, and the film directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), has finally locked in two of its leads. According the The Hollywood Reporter, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Maisie Williams (HBO’s Game of Thrones) are heading up the cast that will consist of a whole teen mutant team.

Boone co-wrote the script with writing partner Knate Gwaltney based on the comic spinoff that began in the 1980s, two decades after the X-Men comic books had already been dominating the scene. The film will follow “the angst-driven adventures” of a group of mutant teens that will include Native American Danielle Moonstar, Scottish girl Wolfsbane, Brazilian lethario Sunspot, a Kentucky born boy named Cannonball, and and a Russian girl named Magik. The rest of the casting will stay true to ethnicity — the search is currently underway in North and South America for the Moonstar and Sunspot actors, respectively.

Taylor-Joy, known for her breakout in The Witch and her role in this year’s Split, will play Russian born Magik. She is a sorceress who uses teleportation discs to travel. She is also the sister of Colossus, a mutant who appeared in Deadpool. Taylor-Joy will next appear in Thoroughbred, a dark indie thriller that also stars the late Anton Yelchin.

Williams, known for playing Aria Stark on Game of Thrones, will play Wolfsbane, a girl who struggles with reconciling her religion and her new wolf-transforming powers. She will next be appearing in biopic Mary Shelley alongside Elle Fanning.
