On Monday the filmmaker from Chile Nicolás López was sentenced to five years in prison following his sexual abuse trial. He was condemned on the accusations of assaulting two actresses that he worked with. He was also acquitted of three separate rape charges, including one of a minor, due to insufficient evidence.
López is a high profile filmmaker in Chile, but is most known in the English-speaking world for his work on the 2015 Eli Roth film Knock Knock, starring Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas.
These claims are alleged to have taken place between 2004 and 2016 in the workplace, noting that López allegedly abused his status to push himself onto the women with force. These accusations first came to light in 2018 when 8 victims brough these allegations to light at the height of the #MeToo movement.
López has since fervently denied any such allegations. However, the turning of the tide in the case seems to be when prosecutors came into possession of some text messages which would seem to imply that López essentially illegitimizes the previous statement. Once the new evidence was announced and he was initially convicted, López’s lawyers fought for a reduced sentence, which was not granted.
