With so many films changing from theatrical release to streaming thanks to COVID-19, many are wondering what will be the next major studio to adopt this tactic. As of now, it seems Sony Pictures is the next contender, as the highly anticipated Tom Hanks World War II drama Greyhound will now be streaming on AppleTV+.
Greyhound was initially set to be released on June 12 but, due to COVID-19 pandemic closing down theaters till no earlier than July, the film had been delayed indefinitely. Apple has now made a $70 million dollar deal with Sony to release the film on their platform later down the line. No release date has been set for Greyhound, though Apple is expected to announce it within the next few weeks.
Recently, Apple has been making it so their new service will provide many high profile film projects with big names attached. Some of these include Bryce Dallas Howard’s documentary Dads, Sofia Coppola’s new film On the Rocks, and some selections from Sundance including Hala, The Elephant Queen and Boys State. Therefore, having a war drama with one of the most highly acclaimed actors in the industry doesn’t seem too far off from the type of films they want. Hopefully Greyhound gets more people interested in Apple’s streaming service, especially given the inaccessibility of movie theaters right now.
