With 49 films to his name, director Woody Allen is set to officially release his 50th film, Coup de Chance, in American theaters.
Starting April 5, moviegoers will be able to see the French-language film on the big screen. It will also be released on streaming platforms a week later, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
MPI Media groups will be in charge of releasing the film. The film originally debuted during the Venice Film Festival last September and between the time of its release till now, those who wanted to watch the movie translated into English had to go to underground events, mostly in New York.
The film follows Fanny and Jean, played by Lou de Laâge (The Innocents) and Melvil Poupaud (Speed Racer), couple who are in love. However, when Fanny reunites with Alain, an old classmate played by Niels Schneider (Heartbeats), the two begin to develop an affair with one another in this thriller comedy, according to IMDb.
The film has seen success in Europe, grossing $7.3 million at the box office. Allen has also seen success in recent years with the release of the 2022 film A Rainy Day in New York, grossing $28.3 million internationally.
Allen himself is not without controversy, and that controversy has started to affect whether or not audiences, especially young audiences, attend his films. He has been accused of sexual assault by his daughter, Dylan Farrow, according to The New York Times, he is also married to his step-daughter, whom he met through his ex-wife Mia Farrow. Further, despite decent box office taking, A Rainy Day in New York’s star Timothee Chalamet famously donated his salary from the film after being made aware of the abuse. According to The Wrap, Chalamet stated “I have been asked in a few recent interviews about my decision to work on a film with Woody Allen last summer. I’m not able to answer the question directly because of contractual obligations,” he continued. “But what I can say is this: I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities.”
It will be interesting to see how these factors impact the box office draw of Allen’s new film.
