Amazon Prime Video’s War of the Worlds is getting a ton of buzz for all the wrong reasons. The Rich Lee film, which was available to stream on July 30, scored a shocking 4% on Rotten Tomatoes from 27 reviews. This figure represents an increase from the 0% rating it scored a couple of days ago.
In light of the film’s lack of critical appraisal, Rotten Tomatoes shared a list of the 100 Worst Movies of All Time. War of the Worlds (2025) firmed itself at #88, sharing company with movies like Look Who’s Talking Now (1993) starring John Travolta and Kirstie Alley at #22 and The Ridiculous 6 (2015) starring Adam Sandler and Will Forte at #10.
The 2025 version of War of the Worlds was adapted from H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel of the same name. It was previously remade by industry titans Orson Welles in 1938 and Steven Spielberg in 2005.
Lee’s version of the film stars famed rapper-actor Ice Cube and Eva Longoria, who was recently cast in Amazon MGM Studio’s The Last Sunrise. Patrick Aiello and Timur Bekmambetov produced the film.
The official logline reads, “A gargantuan invasion is coming with this fresh take on the legendary novel of the same name, that is filled with present-day themes of technology, surveillance, and privacy.”
Among a number of outraged reviews, some mentioned the disruption of Amazon advertising. For example, in Eddie Harrison’s 1/5 review for Film-Authority.com, he commented:
…a cinematic atrocity for the ages…yet somehow Ice Cube’s phoned in performance isn’t the worst thing, it’s the rabid product placement for Amazon and Amazon-affiliated products in Rich Lee’s screentime movie that makes War of the Worlds an absolute joke.
Peter Debruge of Variety wrote, “Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon.”
War of the Worlds (2025) is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
