For the last two days, the Eastern United States has been hit with sprawling ice storm freezing out roads, homes, and shutting down schools and businesses, depending on how deep into the storm the communities are located. As a result of this massive freeze, the second-to-last weekend of January has become one of the worst box office hauls of 2026 so far and will likely sit as the lowest with a combination of slower January traffic and the weather shutting out audiences for the time. In this case, seeing a total of $54 million collectively across the board for the slump.
Coming in at number one was a new premiere that, despite doing excellent in previews all Thursday, the ice rolling in on Friday shut down any traffic the film would have picked up. Mercy from Amazon MGM in its domestic opening started with $11.1 million and will have to wait till the thaw for another chance at really making a name.
Mercy does get the crown of being the film to de-throne Avatar: Fire and Ash, and after 6 weeks in theaters and only a $7 million haul, though the feat is not as impressive as studios may have been hoping for. Third is another long-time holdover with Zootopia 2 hitting $5.7 million in its 9th week, easily becoming the animated film of the season. It currently sits at a domestic total of $401.42 million and has already crossed $1 billion internationally.
Fourth went to The Housemaid with $4.2 million, also in its sixth week, just managing to stay ahead of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in its second week with $3.6 million, seeing a staggering drop off for a sophomore outing.
In sixth place came Marty Supreme with $3.54 million, cementing its crown as A24’s most financially successful film with $86.29 million after 6 weeks domestically. Newcomer to theaters, Return to Silent Hill, a continuation of the Silent Hill film franchise, which is adapted from even more popular video games, only saw $3.2 million for its premiere, continuing the streak of struggling releases for the series.
Eighth place went to Hamnet, which skyrocketed back into the top 10 after winning the Golden Globes and earned $2 million for its ninth week in theaters, sitting at a domestic total of $17.62 million for the film.
Ninth has gone to a re-release with Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, also sitting at $2 million, trailing just behind Hamnet. 10th went to Primate in its third week, netting $1.64 million for its junior outing.
Notable additions to the box office include eleventh and twelfth, going to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which both netted $1.6 million each for their respective films.
