According to Deadline, Vertical Entertainment has prevailed in the bidding war for the SXSW thriller The Cow, starring Winona Ryder (Stranger Things) and John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane). The company gained global rights to the film and is slated for an exclusive theatrical release later this year.
The film will be directed by Homecoming co-creator Eli Horowitz and will follow the story of Kath (Ryder) and her boyfriend (Gallagher Jr.) when they arrive at a remote cabin in the redwoods and discover a younger, mysterious couple already there. The rental has already been double-booked, so neither couple has anywhere else to go. When her boyfriend disappears with the younger woman, Kath becomes obsessed with getting to the bottom of their sudden breakup – but the truth is worse than she could ever imagine.
The Cow also stars Dermot Mulroney (The Courier), Owen Teague (It franchise), and Brianne Tju (47 Meters Down). Horowitz and Matthew Derby pen the script. The film is set to release later this year.
