In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Willem Dafoe discussed the recent reprisal of his role as Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home where he returned to the character for the first time since Sam Raimi’s 2002 film, Spider-Man. During the discussion, he revealed that he often “fantasizes” about playing the Joker, or some form of the character, opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s newest iteration.
“There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter. So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that [claims] to be the Joker that isn’t the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did. I fantasized about that. But other than that I am not talking to anybody [about it], you’re the first one.”
While Dafoe says that he hasn’t had any official discussions about the possibility, fans are excited by the idea nonetheless. Dafoe has been fan casted as the Joker for years and the idea of him playing an imposter of the Joker across from Joaquin Phoenix is a fun dream for comic book fans and cool to know that even Dafoe himself is interested in the role.
