Following Will Smith’s controversial slap at The 94th Academy Awards, he has issued an apology via Instagram condemning his violent outburst:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Smith posted. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.” Smith continued noting his reasoning behind the decision to hit Chris Rock on stage was due to “a joke about Jada’s medical condition,” Smith said.
The LAPD said Rock declined to press charges following the unprecedented incident.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong,” Smith said, emphasizing regret and embarrassment regarding his actions. The Academy has since publicly condemned Smith’s actions and has since launched a formal review of the incident. CNN reports they considered removing Smith following the slap.
This is Smith’s second time apologizing for his outburst. The first came moments after securing an award for best actor and the second elaborated on some of his points: “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be,” Smith wrote. “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
