Disney is eyeing a big name to lead the cast for their latest live-action remake. Will Smith is reportedly in talks, according to Deadline, to star in Dumbo, their Tim Burton-directed feature centering on the titular big-eared circus elephant.
The studio is eager to move into production for their family film, and currently have a greenlit script from Ehren Kruger. Disney will need to fit this film into Smith’s busy schedule. He is currently starring in and producing his next film Bright with a script by Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra). He is also working with Sony Pictures to lock in start date for the sequel Bad Boys for Life, which is already set to release in one year on January 12, 2018.
Dumbo seems like it may be somewhat of a departure for Smith, who is typically attached to action, comedies, or heavy dramas and has thus far strayed from family fare. His first and last children’s role was a voice in 2004’s Shark Tale. This would also be his first time working with quirky acclaimed director Tim Burton. The filmmaker will likely show audiences a side to Smith that hasn’t been seen before.
Until Dumbo‘s future release, Disney fans can look forward to seeing recent Golden Globe-winner Emma Stone in Cruella and Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise.
