Not even an hour after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, the actor accepted the Academy Award for Best Leading Actor tonight at the Oscars for his performance in King Richard. Smith had been nominated for best actor three times and this was his first win.
Smith broke down in tears while giving his speech. He begins with honoring Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams and the character he played in King Richard, as a “fierce defender of his family.” Smith emphasized his role as a protector and his calling by God to protect and love the people in his life. He also mentions how in the film industry, one has to face abuse and disrespect on their craft and pretend that it’s okay. Smith quotes Denzel Washington’s advice, saying “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you”, which earned cheers from the audience.
The actor continued to declare that all he does is not for an award, but for spreading the love for his people and for the world. Smith thanked the Williams family for their trust, his family, and everyone who worked in King Richard. In a serious but lighthearted manner, he apologized to the Academy for his previous behavior at the ceremony tonight and hoped he would be invited back for future years.
