Warner Bros. is upping the ante for its I Am Legend franchise by not only bringing back its original star, Will Smith but also recruiting Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan for the duo’s first film together where they will star and produce. All plot details are being kept under wraps for now.
In early December 2007, I Am Legend starring Will Smith in a deserted post-apocalyptic New York City infested with zombies, went on to gross $256.4M domestic and $585.4M worldwide. Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson 1954 novel for the original 2007 movie, will return to write the script in addition to producing the sequel. Francis Lawrence, the original film’s director, has not yet been attached to the upcoming sequel. The project is still in early development and no director is yet attached.
The news adds to Smith’s momentum of wins including being nominated for an Oscar for both Best Actor and Best Picture for King Richard, as well as winning Best Actor at the SAG Awards and the NAACP Image Awards.
Jordan will return as Adonis Creed in Creed III, which he will star and direct.
Smith’s Westbrook Studios will produce the project, with Ryan Shimazaki overseeing on behalf of the entertainment company. The announcement was made official on Will Smith’s Instagram.
