The movie adaptation of the musical Wicked has been established as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global history. The film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande has generated over $634 million worldwide. Surpassing another Universal Pictures distributed film, Mamma Mia!, Wicked has successfully earned a whopping $424 million domestically. The film now takes third place behind Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine for 2024 domestic box office earnings. This achievement also places the Jon M. Chu directed film in the top 50 highest-grossing domestic films of all time.
Erivo and Grande have received significant accolades for their performances, including a Golden Globe nomination each. The film was nominated in two other categories as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, Wicked has a 88% fresh rating from the critics and a 95% rating on the Popcornmeter from over 25,000 users.
The film Wicked is an adaptation of the Broadway mega hit based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire’s book reimagines the film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s book by the same title. Popular songs from Stephen Schwartz such as, Defying Gravity and Dancing Through Life, are performed by the cast of Chu’s film.
Fortunately for Wicked fans, the film goes to digital as early as December 31, 2024. Those wanting more will have to wait until Wicked: For Good, the sequel. Wicked: For Good is scheduled for release November 2025.
