Ahead of the release of Wicked, the film’s confirmed follow up has changed its release date. Opposed to releasing November 26th of 2025, it’s now opening November 21st.
Serving as a prequel to the classic film Wizard Of Oz, Wicked tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North before audiences found them in the original movie, depicting them starting as rivals and then growing into a friendship.
Jon M. Chu is responsible for bringing Wicked to the screen from its longtime home on Broadway. Originally, the Wicked show was based on a book written by Gregory Maguire in 1995 that would go on to be adapted by Stephen Schwartz, with the book adaptation from Winnie Holzman.
Originally, Wicked: Part Two was open side by side with Zootopia 2, the awaited follow-up to 2016’s Zootopia. Upon its release, Zootopia opened to $75 million domestically, and went on to gross $1 billion worldwide.
Variety pointed out that the first part of Wicked actually went through a similar shift in its own release schedule. Much like the second part, Wicked is scheduled to debut around the Thanksgiving season. However, Wicked itself also moved its release up by about five days, no longer sharing its release date with another Disney sequel, Moana 2.
Wicked flies into theaters November 22nd.
