Wicked: For Good reached a wonderful $30.8 million at the domestic box office in previews. This is the best showing of the year, and it beat its number from last year, which was $19.2 million.
Monday Amazon Prime screenings brought in $6.1 million from 1,050 theaters, followed by $6.5 million from Wednesday advance screenings in 2,300 theaters. Thursday had double feature and standard preview showings, which brought it a total gross of $18.2 million from 3,350 locations.
Over the past few months, particularly in October, the box office was all but dead and buried. However, Wicked: For Good could bring it back to life with a record-setting opening weekend, estimated at $125 million-plus domestically and over $200 million worldwide. Universal has said, “Anything more than $115 in North America would be a huge victory.”
Wicked: For Good follows Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda in part two of the story of their friendship, based on the widely known Broadway musical and novel.
Advance ticket sales have been defying gravity for the sequel, following the crew’s press run, which includes a collaboration with Dancing With the Stars, involving director Jon M. Chu as a guest judge, and a one-hour special, titled Wicked: One Wonderful Night. One Wonderful Night included fan favorite songs from Wicked, and a preview of songs from For Good, such as the two new original songs, “No Place Like Home” sung by Erivo, and “The Girl in the Bubble” sung by Grande, and is available to stream on Peacock.
Wicked: For Good is Fandango’s top PG-rated preseller of all time, and is also the biggest preseller of 2025 to date. Additionally, the film’s audience ratings have reached 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to its 96% last year with Wicked.
One year ago, on the same weekend, Wicked made history, debuting with $112.5 million in its three-day debut, which was the best showing for a musical adaptation ever. The film ultimately brought in nearly $750 million at the worldwide box office, which was also the best showing for a Broadway musical adaptation ever.
