As Wicked returns to theaters with For Good on the 26th of this month, the film has high expectations of taking over the box office for another year. 2024’s Wicked accomplished a record-breaking opening weekend debut of $114 million, which is the all-time best for a Broadway musical adaptation, surpassing Les Misérables.
In addition to its domestic gross, Wicked nabbed $164 million globally in its first weekend. In total, the film grossed a worldwide total of $756 million globally, with $473 million from domestic sales, making it the highest-grossing Broadway musical movie adaptation of all time.
Now, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is tracking to open to $115 million-plus at the Thanksgiving box office. This would set a new record for the Broadway musical adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter insiders at leading market research firm NRG predict it could approach, or even surpass, the $120 million mark.
Wicked: For Good reunites director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt with stars Cynthis Erivo and Ariana Grande. Erivo is Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, while Grande is Glinda the Good Witch. Both actresses and the film are expected to be major competitors in the Oscar race.
Last year, Wicked opened with Gladiator II, but this year, For Good is the only studio tentpole debuting. Disney’s Zootopia 2 opens on the following Wednesday.
