Despite a crowded holiday season, Wicked keeps defying gravity at the box office, reaching a new milestone, according to Collider. Released on November 22, 2024, the film is an adaptation of the smash-hit Broadway play, which itself was an adaptation of the novel by Gregory Maguire, both of the same name, which was influenced by the original Wizard of Oz novels by L. Frank Baum.
Facing stiff competition from sequels such as Gladiator II, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic The Hedgehog 3, the musical has now crossed $700 million worldwide in its ninth week of release. This, even though it did not do as well internationally, grossing only $244 million, versus $465 million domestically on a $150 million budget.
The film has also done well critically, sitting at an 88% Fresh Rating and 95% “certified hot” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and receiving multiple nods on the festival circuit, including four at the Golden Globes, five at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and eleven at the Critic’ Choice Awards, with several nominations expected at the 97th Academy Awards.
Wicked will end its theatrical run just short of the top 25 all-time grossing films list.
A continuation of the story, Wicked: For Good, is scheduled for release in November.
