Greenwich Entertainment has received the rights to Who I am Not, a documentary directed by Tünde Skovrán and produced by Patricia Arquette, known for The Indian Runner (1991) and Boyhood (2014). The documentary explores the lives and experiences of intersex people through the stories of Sharon-Rose Khumalo, a South African beauty queen, who discovers her male genetics at age 21, and Dimakatso Sebidi, a male-presenting intersex activist, who survived genital mutilation from childhood. The film is set to be released in theaters in Spring of 2024, following its awards-qualifying theatrical release November 10-16th at Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles. The director, Tünde Skovrán, and documentary subject, Sharon-Rose Khumalo, will also be in attendance at the New York premier at DOC NYC on November 14. 

Who I am Not gives a voice to the intersex community, and according to a Deadline article, “[…] They [Sharon-Rose Khumalo and Dimakatso Sebidi] navigate together the complexities of their identities and challenge deep-rooted societal taboos, their intertwined stories reveal the resilience and beauty of intersex lives hidden in plain sight.” 

The film already boast of numerous awards, including, the Silver Horn Award for High Artistic Merit at the Krakow International Film Festival, the Debut Feature of the Year award at Queer Scope Germany, the Best Documentary “Being Oneself” award at Doc Edge, and the Audience Choice Award at Frameline 47. 

The work is deeply personal to the director, and in an interview with Awards Radar, Tünde Skovrán, said about making the film, “I wanted to tell stories that somehow challenge the social expectations, or the social norm.” 

What I am Not joins Greenwich Entertainment’s list of award contenders alongside Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, directed by Anna Hint; and Pianoforte, directed by Jakub Piatek.
