However one important kind of movie going experience has been weirdly overlooked, the drive in movie theater. Drive in movie theaters have a history that dates back to the early 1910’s, but they did not become popular until the 1940’s. Over the years the popularity of drive in movie theaters in the Untied States has fluctuated. Recently news sources like NBC, NPR and ABC have reported that the pandemic has increased the popularity of drive in movie theaters in the United States. Unlike regular movie theaters drive in theaters allow people to spread out and safely social distance themselves. Vox has also reported that drive in theaters are also being utilized for live musical performances.
Across the country many drive in theaters are remaining open, and a lot of them are currently hosting Christmas movie festivals.
Drive in movie theaters may not be able to replace traditional movie theaters entirely, but they can still be a great way for people to get some sort of a theatrical viewing experience while staying safe. Who knows, perhaps drive ins can even help save cinema.
