Director Wes Anderson is returning to the world of stop-motion animation. The Grand Budapest Hotel writer and director revealed during a Q&A at the Lisbon and Estoil Film Festival that he’s looking to make a stop-motion animated anthology film inspired by Vittorio De Sica’s The Gold of Naples.
That film featured a series of six short stories, all set in the city of Naples. Anderson’s film will follow the same format, though he didn’t reveal where he will set his story. Anderson has explored his fascination with different locales and cultures in the past. His latest, The Grand Budapest Hotel was set in Southern Europe, and The Darjeeling Limited featured three brothers traveling across India by rail. The former also included some scenes with miniatures. In 2009 Anderson adapted the Roald Dahl novel, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, using stop-motion animation, so clearly the director is very familiar with the format.
No casting announcements or production schedule was announced but it’s safe to assume some of the director’s regular actors will have some role in the film. Anderson is currently co-writing another project with his frequent collaborator, Roman Coppola.
