“Pain is our rocket fuel.”
Robert Zemeckis, director of classics Forrest Gump and Cast Away, brings us a new and beautiful story that also happens to be true. Welcome to Marwen follows the amazing story of Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) as he rediscovers his freedom and joy through his unique art and imagination.
The trailer begins explaining to us watchers just how talented Mark is when it comes to his work inspired by his original world, Marwen. Devastatingly, though, he gets attacked by a group of Nazi gang members, and he is beaten so badly that he nearly loses his life along with most of his normal motor functions.
“I was a hell of a good artist, and now I can barely write my name…” As Mark struggles to heal both mentally and physically, he finds solace in the world of the brave and dashing Hogie who lives in Marwen. There, he finds his bravery, his safety net, and his creativity.
Every doll he creates is based off of a person in his life who has helped him become better. One is a physical therapist played by Janelle Monae, and another becomes fully formed in front of us after he meets his sweet and beautiful new neighbor played by Leslie Mann.
Although he feels safe and protected in Marwen, the real world is a place filled with terror for Mark. When he has to testify against the Nazi scum who nearly killed him, his only safety comes from the connection he has to his dolls and the bravery they show him every day. Through them, he learns that he can be just as gutsy as any of them since he created them in his own mind.
The whole story is bound to be filled with both laughter and tears, and we cannot wait for this film to his the big screen.
Other cast members include Eiza Gonzalez, Gwendoline Christie, and Diane Kruger.
The film is set for release on November 21, 2018.
