Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…

These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to. 

There are some films that will end up being very big on this week’s list, but it’s clear we’re heading towards the end of the summer season. Not to say there won’t be major marketing pushes for the likes of The Wolverine, Elysium, and the like, but this week’s list is decidedly lacking in the “summer tentpole” department. And we’re ok with that.

#5 – Austenland Official Trailer #1

Honestly, this looks like a movie that could end up a very predictable romance flick, but the premise scores major interest points. If this sort of thing doesn’t already exist, you can bet it will once this movie comes out.

#4 – Saving Mr. Banks Official Trailer #1

A Disney film about Disney himself, with a hefty dose of the superlative Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers. It seems we’re experiencing something of a Tom Hanks renaissance as well, or at least an attempted one, as the two-time Oscar winner seems to be cropping up more often lately than he did in the mid- to late-2000s. Best case scenario for this movie: it’s the second coming of Finding Neverland.

#3 – Wadjda Official Trailer #1

If you want to see this movie, it’s going to take some work. It’s been riding the festival circuit for the last year and has seen distribution in a number of international territories, but there presently isn’t a release plan in the U.S. But if you can see it, do; this is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and was directed by a woman to boot.

#2 – Oldboy Red Band Trailer

We’ve given Oldboy coverage already this week, including a story on the trailer. But it’s significant for a number of reasons (cast, notability of the film it’s remaking, director), and deserves its spot on our countdown this week. The trailer’s pretty good, too.

#1 – Out of the Furnace Official Trailer #1

This has “Major Awards Season Player” written all over it, but let’s not presume it’s mere Oscar bait. This trailer looks good. Very good. We know Christian Bale can carry a movie, and he looks in fine form next to Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Shepard. Add to that the director of the multiple-Oscar winning Crazy Heart in Scott Cooper, producers Michael Costigan (Prometheus, American Gangster), Leonardo DiCaprio, Ridley Scott, and the late Tony Scott, not to mention cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi (Warrior, Silver Linings Playbook), and it’s not hard to see why this movie is being released December 6.
