Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
In this very special edition of the weekly trailer roundup, we have not five, but ten trailers for your perusal. Oh, they’ll still be counted down five to one, there will just be two films in each spot. Specifically, in each spot we present a trailer for a movie that hopes we take it very seriously, and one trailer that hopes (or at least should) very much that we don’t. We’ll call it Aspirations of Grandeur versus What The Heck Was That?
#5 – Elysium Extended Trailer and Cockneys vs. Zombies Official Trailer #1
Our first pairing is all about social divisions. In the case of Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi epic, it’s strong social commentary about capitalism and the greed of the rich and powerful. In Cockney’s vs. Zombies, it’s more about the division between the living and the undead.
#4 – All Is Lost Theatrical Trailer and Bad Milo Official Red Band Trailer #1
A warning about the second of these: It’s. Messed. Up. And not in the way that Robert Redford’s boat gets messed up in All Is Lost. That trailer conveys the same elegiac emptiness I expect the full film to possess, but at the point you think, “Hey, you know what would make a good film? A murderous monster sprouting from a guy’s butt,” I think all actually is lost.
#3 – Lone Survivor Official Trailer #1 and Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Official Trailer #1
The trailer for Mark Wahlberg’s Navy SEALs movie rolled in. A major crux of the plot is deciding what to do with a couple Afghani locals who stumble onto their hidden team. Sort of the reverse is going on in Bad Grandpa, as a couple, erm, characters are unleashed on an unsuspecting public. Very Borat, perhaps too much so for its own good.
#2 – The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Trailer and Gallowwalkers Official Trailer #2
This pairing features unexpected starring appearances. Ben Stiller’s not a stranger to serious roles, but generally they’ve come in as part of a comedy (Meet the Fockers or Along Came Polly, for example). Not that Walter Mitty won’t have it’s share of humor, but it figures to be far more of a drama. And then we have Wesley Snipes’s return to the big screen. As a dreadlocked cowboy. With an artificially grey line in his beard. Fighting the undead. It’s like it was made for RiffTrax.
#1 – American Hustle Trailer and Machete Kills Official Trailer #2
Here’s an irony for you: the first trailer for a movie that is all about it’s story and characters is dominated by music and montage, while it’s counterpart, which figures to care very little about its story, delivers its most narrative-driven trailer to date.
