Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
This week was down a bit in terms of volume (probably due to the holiday), but we’ve still got the goods.
#5 – Pacific Rim Official Trailer #3
Pacific Rim has long been filed under the “this looks terrible” heading for me, but you do have to admire the chutzpah at making a self-serious movie about massive robots controlled by two people (I’m assuming there’s an explanation for that?) fighting giant undersea aliens. This is probably the best trailer the film’s had to offer, and in case you’ve managed to avoid any Pacific Rim marketing thus far, we feel obliged, with it releasing next week, to say, “Hey! Look at this!”
#4 – TIE – The Boxtrolls Official Trailer #1 and Black Nativity Official Teaser Trailer #1
This is essentially a teaser trailer, and Black Nativity is closer to a full trailer than a teaser, so these two movies about family seem to fit together in an odd sort of way.
The Boxtrolls positively exudes charm. Add a distinctive visual style, an interesting new sort of fairy tale, and a compelling voice cast led by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End), and this is one worth keeping an eye on.
For Black Nativity, it’s a little early for the Christmas movie push to begin, but this one would appear to be about so much more than the holidays. This trailer promises a heartfelt and complex musical that ought not just be considered a “black movie.
#3 – Delivery Man Official Trailer #1
Vince Vaughn can be pretty hit or miss. Spot on in Dodgeball and Wedding Crashers, not so much in Couples Retreat or The Dilemma. That said, this trailer is actually pretty funny, and has a lot of heart to boot.
#2 – Therese Official Theatrical Trailer
In watching this trailer, the movie I was most strongly reminded of was Argo. They’re films about very different things, but every indication is that Therese displays the same sort of classical filmmaking excellence that made Argo last year’s Best Picture.
#1 – Inside Llewyn Davis Theatrical Trailer #1
This week’s top spot goes to the first full trailer for the Coen Brothers’ new film. And really, what’s not to like. Great acting, great music, great direction, and a ringing Cannes endorsement.
