Weekly Trailer Roundup – 6/22 thru 6/28

Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…

These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.

If there were a theme word for this week, it would be “weird.” There’s a whole lot of weird going ’round. Not really a bad thing. Just a weir…a…uh….well, this is self-defeating. How about we just take a look at the trailers?

#5 – Instructions Not Included Official Trailer #1

This trailer is more than half in Spanish, but don’t let that scare you away. There’s a lot of heart on display here, and while it doesn’t look like the movie quite escapes a few indie drama cliches, it does, at least, make an interesting combination of them.

#4 – Prince Avalanche Official Trailer #2

Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch are both solid actors, but it’s hard to believe this film hasn’t pushed them. Its success will live or die by their ability to give compelling performances that are both funny and real without devolving into weird inaccessibility or trite drama.

#3 – Hell Baby

Look, even if you don’t want to see the movie when this trailer is over, you have to admit that the trailer itself was pretty entertaining. I don’t usually go for stupid funny, but this looks just clever enough that it might be hilarious.

#2 – Escape Plan Official Trailer #1

It’s clear that, if nothing else, Sylvester Stallone has had a ton of fun making the Expendables movies (of course, the ton of cash he’s made on the side hasn’t hurt). He and Arnold Schwartzenegger seem hell-bent on pushing off retirement as long as possible, and I’ve gotta say, I’m way more excited for this movie than for any of their other recent efforts.

#1 – Gatchaman Japanese Trailer

Why, yes. The trailer is in Japanese without subtitles. Why, no. No, it does not matter. Like Hell Baby, don’t worry too much about the movie that’s actually being advertised. In the words of Eddie Izzard’s cover of The Beatles’ of “For the Benefit of Mr. Kite,” “Just tune in, turn off, drop out, drop in, switch off, switch on, and explode.”
