Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
It was admittedly a bit of a weak week in the trailer department, but we’ve nonetheless scared up five worth talking about.
#5 – TIE – Prisoners Trailer #1 and Closed Circuit Trailer #1
It’s a little early to ascertain the quality of these films. Hugh Jackman and Eric Bana, respectively, spend a lot of time looking concerned (thus the tie), and both of these movies show enough promise to be worth the early look.
#4 – This Is The End International Trailer
Maybe it looks worryingly similar to the stuff this group of guys typically puts out, but those films are often very funny and this one shows promise. Sidebar: I desperately want a trailer to this movie set to Adelle’s “Skyfall.”
“This is the ennnnnnddd….”
#3 – Monsters University Final Trailer
Ugh. We talked little Wednesday about how it seems like Pixar’s magic juice is running out, and this is a great example of it. Maybe the Monsters, Inc. sequel will find the balance of appeals-to-kids-and-parents-too, but this trailer seems to be trying so hard to hit both that it struggles to find either consistently.
#2 – Machete Kills International Trailer
Honestly, I couldn’t sit through ten minutes of the first Machete movie, so it’s incredible to me that Robert Rodriguez is able to pull in all the stars that he does. But therein lies the brilliance of this trailer. What starts out looking like a dismissable B-movie gets so bat-s*** crazy by the end that it’s almost impossible to look away.
#1 – The World’s End Trailer #1
Of the two apocalyptic comedies on this list, this is by far the more interesting (with apologies to Rogen and co.). This film looks bloody hilarious.
