Now that Netflix has finished flexing with its short run of KPop Demon Hunters, Weapons retakes the first spot at the theatrical box office with $10.2 million. Labor Day weekend is well known for those in the industry to not be a big movie holiday, with numbers always tending to skew lower. At $62.71 million, this year’s Labor Day collective total held true to this pre-established trend, though it is a noticeable $24 million lower than 2024’s $86 million, which had an insane but welcomed boost in the form of Deadpool & Wolverine. With the summer box office coming to a close and Fall kicking off next week, the industry as a whole saw $3.67 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which is down 0.2% from 2024 and 10.2% from 2023. Collective totals from their calculations based on Comscore’s reported data.
Though the most notable number for this weekend comes in the form of the 50th anniversary re-release of Jaws, which still has bite a good few decades later. Netting $8.1 million, the Jaws re-release eked past two newcomers that were both highly anticipated and boasted star-studded headliners with Austin Butler in Caught Stealing and the powerful team-up of Benedict Cumberbatch with Olivia Colman in The Roses, a remake of the divorce comedy War of the Roses.
Though both newcomers suffered notably lower than expected critic reviews, audiences still seem to have resonated with the films, giving both the higher end of the B+ on average, and The Roses in particular had an incredibly stronger overseas premiere with $9.2 million from international markets.
Caught Stealing took third with $7.82 million while Freakier Friday hung on to the top five in fourth place with $6.52 million, beating out The Roses $6.35 million in its domestic showing.
Getting into the lower five, in sixth place was The Fantastic Four: First Steps with $4.8 million, and another close call just passing the Bad Guys 2 in seventh with $4.74 million.
Eighth went to Superman with $2.58 million, still in the top ten after eight weeks in theaters, beating Nobody 2, which plummeted down to ninth with $1.83 million.
Rounding out the top ten was Naked Gun with $1.8 million in its fifth week for a nice domestic total of $50.8 million. Naked Gun blocked another newcomer, the much anticipated The Toxic Avenger starring the incredibly talented Peter Dinklage, who, despite being arguably one of the most accomplished actors of all time, wasn’t enough to carry the film into the top ten, landing the film in eleventh with $1.75 million. Though there is still a chance for Toxic Avenger to climb higher next week on the run back and power through to escape box office bomb territory.
