‘Weapons’ Star Amy Madigan Joins Jason Segel In In Apple Thriller ‘Sponsor’

Amy Madigan in 'Weapons'

Amy Madigan, also known as dear Aunt Gladys in Weapons, is joining another psychological thriller, according to Deadline. She is set to join the cast of the Apple Original Films thriller Sponsor alongside Jason Segel, with James Ponsoldt directing.

Apple Studios will also produce the film, which is set to be shot in California. John C. Reilly is also set to join the cast. The film is an original idea co-written by Segal and Ponsoldt, who will also serve as executive producers on another Apple original, the Emmy-nominated comedy, Shrinking, which returns in January for its third season. The pair has previously worked together on the 2015 film, The End of the Tour, also directed by Ponsoldt, and starring Segel as writer David Foster.

Sponsor follows Peter, played by Segel, after he makes a major mistake, getting behind the wheel after partying too hard. He gets into a terrible accident, leaving him with two options: prison or a recovery program. Doubtful of any drinking problem, he reluctantly shows up to his first meeting looking for a sponsor. Jerry, played by Reilly, is a no-nonsense, charismatic, yet somehow enigmatic, and that leads Peter to believe Jerry is the answer to his prayers.

From Apple Studios and produced by Platinum Dunes, the feature will be produced by Segel and Ponsoldt as well as Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Alex Ginno who will produce for Platinum Dunes.

Golden Globe nominee Madigan has been a popular star since her performance in Weapons. She can currently be seen again as Aunt Gladys on HBO Max, and in Max Walker-Silverman’s film Rebuilding alongside Josh O’Connor and Meghann Fahy.
