Zach Creggar’s Weapons performed higher than expected with a $42.5 million opening and incredible critical and audience reviews, especially for the notable hard-to-please horror genre. Originally expected to hit $25 million, from projections on Friday, Weapons beat the original estimated number one contender Disney’s Freakier Friday, which had an original estimate of $30 million, falling just slightly short of it at $29 million. Part of Weapons’s success, aside from its apparently popular twist ending, was its IMAX release. The premium screens are helping boost ticket sales.
In another concerning 60% drop, Fantastic Four: First Steps saw only $15.5 million for its third week. Despite the popularity of the four reviving and the positive response, Marvel has likely encountered a bit of a stigma with the string of flops for its current releases, meaning it will still be more work to be done in order to gain back the once-shining reputation of quality.
The fourth spot went to The Bad Guys 2 with $10.4 million in its second week, attracting more family fun. Rounding out the top five, the not-so-family-friendly The Naked Gun took home an additional $8.37 million in its second week, helping encourage the success of comedies in theaters again.
Week five for Superman saw it take sixth place. The $7.8 million helped it close in on an international total of $600 million as it nears the end of its run. While James Gunn himself has stated that he did not expect the film to reach the billion mark, it is clearly beloved and could still see some more success in the coming weeks.
Summer tent pole Jurassic World Rebirth hangs on in 7th with $4.7 million after six weeks, proving once again that dinosaurs are still cool.
Another surprising summer tent pole, with F1 The Movie hanging on in eighth after 7 weeks with $2.8 million. Together dropped down to ninth in its second week, bringing home $2.6 million. Tenth went to Angel Studio’s Sketch, which premiered this week to $2.52 million
