Relativity Media has released the first trailer for the heist comedy Masterminds, starring Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids). The pair play two night guards for an armored car company who steal the cash kept in their employer’s facility. Their boss, played by Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers), hires a bounty hunter (We’re the Millers‘ Jason Sudeikis) to apprehend the amateur crooks.
The movie is directed by Jared Hess (Napolean Dynamite), whose previous movie, Gentlemen Broncos, went largely unnoticed after it premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2009. This is the first movie Hess is directing that he didn’t also write. The screenplay was written by Chris Bowman, Danny McBride, Hubbel Palmer, Emily Spivey, and Jody Hill (Observe and Report). The latter’s work typically centers on the exploits of members of the American lower middle class looking for a quick way to raise their socio-economic standing. Based on the trailer, it looks like those elements are in full force here.
This is Kristen Wiig’s first starring role in a mainstream comedy since she appeared in Bridesmaids in 2011. She has mostly stuck with independent dramedies like The Skeleton Twins and Nasty Baby, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. She’s also on tap to reunite with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig for his new Ghostbusters reboot. Masterminds also marks a return to mainstream comedy for Galifianakis, who is coming off his supporting performance in this year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, Birdman. He’s also set to star in Greg Mottola’s (Adventureland) comedy Keeping Up with Jones.
Masterminds is slated to release August 7. Check out the trailer below.
