For the first time ever, the most famous vampire from the Spider-Man universe, Dr. Michael Morbius, is on the big screen with Jared Leto playing the iconic web shooter’s antagonist. Deadline reports that the trailer for Morbius was released today, showing an ailing Morbius who undergoes his own experimental treatment for a rare blood disorder and unleashes an inner darkness.
Morbius is the latest villain (or, judging by the trailer, anti-hero) from the Spider-Man universe also comprised by Tom Hardy’s Venom and, recently, Woody Harrelson’s Carnage in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The bad guys are piling up and the best is yet to come to our friend and neighborhood Spidey with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In addition to the trailer, Sony released a “Who is Morbius?” featurette, which explains the character’s backstory, long history in the Marvel comics, Leto’s transformation, his performance, and a clear pun that teases some future crossovers.
The new trailer from Columbia Pictures previews the upcoming installment in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, which will be released in theaters on January 28.
The official synopsis from the trailer: One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?
Towards the end of the clip, Morbius can be seen attacking a man. “Who the hell are you, man?” the victim asks. “I am Venom,” Morbius answers in a mocking tone and then clarifies his real name. This small joking reference to Tom Hardy’s character has fans going crazy, already anticipating a whole world of potential crossovers.
Daniel Espinosa directs the Morbius story and screenplay written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless and based on the Marvel Comics. Jared Leto stars, the cast including Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious) as detective Simon Stroud, Adria Arjona (True Detective) or Jared Harris (Chernobyl), with the stellar appearance of yes, you guessed right, Michael Keaton. The one who played Adrian Doomes a.k.a. the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming is back in this first trailer to everyone’s surprise. And, although he only says a few words (“Dr. Mike, you and I should stay in touch”), everything indicates that he will be very important in the film and, of course, relevant for the future that lies within the Spider-Man universe.
Be sure to check out the new Morbius trailer below! The film is set to release on January 28,2022.
