Superheroes aren’t the only genre characters that are getting grittier, Christopher Nolan-type reboots. Disney is looking to get in on the action as well with their darker Sleeping Beauty re-imagining, Maleficent. This live-action Walt Disney tale is chock full of tropes that started with Batman Begins including the much darker setting, story points that expand upon Sleeping Beauty’s origin, and even trailer music reminiscent of Hans Zimmer’s blaring horn-hits.
Maleficent looks like it can capture the female portion of the young-adult demographic, and Angelina Jolie seems like just the star to herald this new age of live-action adaptations of classic Disney animated films (Cinderella and The Jungle Book adaptations will be hitting theaters in 2015).
