And another win for Spotlight! The journalism drama directed by Tom McCarthy (The Cobbler) took top honors at the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association. However, it was a share the wealth kind of mood otherwise as an eclectic mix of the years’ top films collected prizes in other categories including Mad Max: Fury Road (winning Director, Production Design and Film Editing), Inside Out (taking Original Screenplay and Animated Feature), Room (which won Adapted Screenplay) and Beasts of No Nation (which earned a Supporting Actor mention for Idris Elba).
Additionally, Saoirse Ronan took Best Actress for her work in Brooklyn, Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor for The Revenant and Alicia Vikander was recognized for the supporting turn in Ex Machina. Founded in 2002, the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association is comprised of 55 print, television, radio and online journalists from D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
