After a fairly mixed year post-Barbenheimer, with films like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One underperforming at the box office, while movies such as Dune: Part Two and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire proved to be modest hits, Warner Bros finds itself back on top again with back-to-back releases of A Minecraft Movie and Sinners. According to a report by Deadline, both films have made Warner Bros a collective $800 million at the worldwide box office.
A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular video game series and directed by Jared Hess, has an estimated budget of $150 million, with the film already making $730 million at the worldwide box office, and is already on track to make $1 billion by the end of its theatrical run. Sinners has a relatively lower budget of $90 million, but with the added risk of being an original film not based around any existing IP with a preexisting audience base. Despite that hurdle, Sinners’ lead star power of Michael B. Jordan and star director Ryan Coogler paved the way for the film’s surprise box office success, already making $87 million worldwide. The film has shown itself to have decent legs, with a low 10 to 20% drop from day to day, meaning it could be on its way to breaking even by the end of its theatrical run.
Warner Bros’ box office successes may continue to grow, with releases such as James Gunn’s Superman and F1, a racing drama starring Brad Pitt from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski (though that film is produced by Apple Studios, with Warner Bros only handling the film’s theatrical distribution). One of Warner Bros’s releases, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, could prove risky with its moderately high $130 million budget. As it stands, though, Warner Bros may be on track to have a reasonably successful year.
