From director Paul Thomas Anderson, starring legendary Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, from Warner Bros. One Battle After Another took first place for its premiere, even though it fell short of original estimates for the $300 million blockbuster hopeful. Despite positive reviews, the film still has a long way to go if it relies on word of mouth and international ticket sales to help it regain profitability. David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise, said to Verity, “This movie has a chance of getting to profitability if it lasts long enough in theaters and/or overperforms abroad,” further backing up this projection.

Coming in second was the family-friendly premiere of Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, with $13.7 million, which beat the previous box office winner Demon Slayer, which in its third week took home an additional $7.1 million, landing in third. In fourth came another one of Warner Bros.’ Box office wins with The Conjuring: Last Rites, raking in $6.86.

Fifth went to newcomer The Strangers: Chapter 2, which landed in its initial ballpark estimate with $5.9 million after near universal panning from both critics and audiences of the sequel, with a C- on CinemaScore and a rotten 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. The original The Strangers: Chapter 1 premiered to $12 million back in 2024, earning a modest $48 million, including its international gross. However, The Strangers: Chapter 2 only cost $8.5 million to produce and will likely still be able to turn a profit even with the negative responses from audiences.

Him dropped to sixth with $3.65 in its second week, with a steep 72% drop, but still beat The Long Walk in seventh with $3.4 million.

Downton Abbey dropped to eighth in its third week with $3.3 million as the theatrical series finale wraps up. Ninth went to another newcomer with They Call Him OG, which brought in $1.4 million, beating A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with $1.25 million, landing down in tenth, cementing the flop in its second week.

Other notable events include Spider-Man 2’s re-release as an extended cut referred to as Spider-Man 2.1, which premiered on September 26th between the original Spider-Man on September 25th and Spider-Man 3 on September 27th as a celebration of the trilogy in a 4k release.

Another premiere in the form of a horror film from Vertical Dead of Winter beat the directorial debut of Scarlett Johanson with Eleanor The Great, bringing in $86k, losing to the $1 million of Dead of Winter.
