Jeremy O. Harris is gearing up for a big year. The playwright responsible for the critically-acclaimed stage production Slave Play has been hired by Warner Bros and Populace to pen a script for an upcoming film adaptation of Ales Kot’s graphic novel The New World, according to Deadline.
Originally issued by Image Comics in 2019, The New World is a sci-fi epic that follows the escapades of a close couple who embarks on a quest traversing the government of the New World. Populace head Tamir Muhammad will act as an executive producer on the project after coming off the heels of HBO’s awarding-winning series Random Acts of Flyness, with Cate Adams and Rebecca Cho supervising the film.
Slave Play received universal acclaim upon its Broadway release in October 2019. Harris’ comedy-drama examines the subject of sexual fetishes, race and the impact slavery has had on American society and, despite some difficult imagery and very clever yet sensitive commentary about American slavery paragons and sexuality, critics cherished the production when it premiered. The production was produced by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories banner and is expected to conclude its 17-week run on January 19.
