Vertical Releases Full Trailer For ‘The Weight’

The Weight has officially released its first trailer. The film shows a prisoner who smuggles gold in order to see his daughter again, meeting fellow inmates along the way to satisfy his journey. The film shows different action sequences, gunfire exchanges and emotional dialogue between the characters.

The film stars Ethan Hawke (Dead Poets Society, Before Sunrise), Austin Armelio (The Walking Dead, Fear The Walking Dead), Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind), Julia Jones (Dexter: New Blood, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Avi Nash (Barry, Learning to Drive), George Burgess (Beast, Locusts), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (The Rain, Desperate Journey), Alec Newman (Frankenstein, A Lonely Place to Die), Sam Hazeldine (The War Below, Dead Mine), Jeffrey Hallman (The Defeated, Cell), Peter Lewys Preston (My Blind Date With Life, Louis van Beethoven) and Cameron Brady (Hillside Drive, Sapphire).

Padraic McKinley (The Exorcism, The Good Lord Bird) directs. The film is set in Oregon in the 1930’s during the goldmine era. Vertical Film Company obtained the rights to the action film.

The Weight was officially selected in the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival. Culture also stated, “We don’t get movies like The Weight anymore.”

The Wrap praised Hawks’ performance, stating, “Ethan Hawke is a force of nature.” Fantastic Film Fans also commented on Crowe’s casting choice, “Russell Crowe absolutely owns the screen.”

Adjectives from different companies such as Deadline, Daily Beast, UPI, Firstshowing and The Film Stage showed in the trailer, describing the film as “Riveting,” “Thrilling,” “Harrowing,” “Superb,” and “Intense.”

Other comments made regarding the film include one from American film critic Roger Ebert (Life Itself, The Kids) on his website where he described the film as “A tense story of life-and-death survival.”

The Weight will premiere September 18, 2026. Watch the trailer below.
