Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been out in theaters for only one day and it’s already looking forward to reach October opening weekend records. According to predictions, the movie will make over $20 million, possibly even $30 million, on its opening day alone.
What started as Tom Hardy’s pet project is expected to become the strongest box office release day during the covid pandemic. Casual movie-goers are back in cinemas as walk-up tickets have shot through the roof. It is estimated that Venom: 2 will make somewhere north of $20 million this Friday. Optimistic predictions even say $30 million. This is a great start to the weekend and will help push the movie above the $60 million range come Sunday. A more bleak prediction could argue that weekends are still very unpredictable during the pandemic. But in the short time that the film has been out in theaters it has done great and can only be expected to continue doing so as advanced tickets sales for the latest Sony Picture are looking strong as well.
October opening day box office record holder is thus far Joker from 2019, with $39.5 million, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Followed by Halloween in second place with $33 million in 2018, third place Venom with $32.5 million in 2018, and fourth place Paranormal Activity with $26.3 million in October of 2011. The only movie coming out this weekend that even comes close to those numbers is Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Releasing this Friday is also The Addam’s Family 2, generating $4.5 million, and Warner Bro’s The Many Saints of Newark making somewhere between $2.5 and $3 million on their debut. The latter is a prequel to one of HBO’s most distinguished shows The Sopranos. Rotten Tomatoes is giving it a very high 76% in their reviews, better than Venom 2 with only 60% so far.
What these numbers really show is that people are finally going out to watch movies on the big screen once more. Venom 2 is just one of the many blockbuster flicks that are releasing in the upcoming months and cinema fans are here to enjoy it with soda and popcorn
