Following a year of minimal updates, the third Tron movie is finally confirmed to begin filming. The film was initially dubbed Tron: Ares, but there’s still speculation if that will remain the title.
Helming the sequel is Joachim Rønning, taking over from the director of Tron Legacy, Joseph Kosinski. This isn’t the first sequel Rønning has done for Disney, having directed 2017’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Kosinski is most well known for the mega-successful Top Gun: Maverick.
Sharing a post on his Instagram, Rønning revealed the title for the new film is stylized as TR3N while captioning it “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID.” ComicBook.com points out that while little is known about the third film, most of the set photo in the post is bathed in a red light. It contrasts with the previous two Tron films, which had primarily blue lighting.
Currently, the cast includes Jared Leto in a leading role alongside Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Sarah Desjardins, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan. There is no confirmation if any cast members from the 1982 classic or Tron: Legacy will be returning.
Following the release of Legacy, director Kosinski stated that he had plans for a third movie and even spoke about what a Tron sequel should be to ComicBook.com.
“Whenever a TRON comes out, it needs to push the envelope in some way or in every way,” he said. “That’s a fundamental requirement of a TRON movie, is it needs to be ambitious on a filmmaking level and hopefully on a narrative level, and the ideas behind it. [Director] Steven Lisberger’s ideas for the first movie were so ahead of their time. I think it’s imperative that that be a part of any TRON movie. I don’t ever see TRON being something where you pump one out every two years. You just can’t. They’re too hard to make. It’s got to be a passion project, and it’s got to really be reaching for something different and innovative and ambitious because that’s in the DNA of it.”
