While dealing in imaginary friends, the box office earnings John Krasinki’s IF is on track for are very realistic. Ahead of its release, early estimates for IF track the movie to be a success in its maiden weekend.
Opening on a May weekend with no big holiday bookending it, IF is looking to imagine an opening of over $40 million.
IF comes from director John Krasinski, who brought audiences A Quiet Place and its sequel and starred in the mega-successful comedy series The Office. Starring Cailey Fleming and Ryan Reynolds, the film follows a young girl teaming up with a neighbor who can see imaginary friends. The duo tries to reunite each imaginary friend with their children so they don’t end up forgotten.
As Deadline points out, IF stands at an interesting spot in terms of releases. It’s a big, marketable release that isn’t standing on the shoulders of a franchise or any existing property to establish itself.
On top of that, the film is also PG, making it the heaviest contender for the biggest family movie coming soon.
Deadline also reported that parent company Paramount keeps up a solid streak with releases this year. Earlier in January, the company had success with Mean Girls, opting to put it in theaters instead of streaming. They also had a hit on their hands with Bob Marley: One Love back in February, capitalizing on the potential revenue of Valentine’s Day.
IF also stars Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fiona Shaw, and Louis Gossett Jr., who unfortunately passed away last month, but completed the role before his death.
IF hits theaters May 17th.
