Universal’s Untitled Madonna Biopic has a Director: It’s Madonna

Per Deadline, the 62 year old singer, songwriter, actress, and, yes, director is set to direct and co-write, with Oscar Winner Diablo Cody, her own biopic for Universal StudiosWith the current success of Pop-star biopics, such as Paramount Picture’s Rocketman(2019) and, surprising Oscar Nominated Bohemian Rhapsody(2018), Amy Pascal seems keen to continue this success in the Untitled Madonna Biopic. Audiences and critics alike have flooded theaters to watch these stories of pop icons, such as Elton John and Freddie Mercury. Though these did not have the actual Rocketman or Queen singers writing or directing, Universal is set to make huge splash with this literal Madonna-led Biopic.

This is not Madonna’s first film rodeo. She garnered some success as an actress in films such as A League of Their Own and Evita, winning a Golden Globe for her latter performance. However, most of her acting success has come nearly three decades ago.

In addition to her acting, she has directed and co-written two features, Filth of a Woman(2008) and W.E(2011). Directing eventual Rise of Skywalker alums Richard E. Grant and Oscar Isaac in each, respectively. Though, both garnered little critical and audience success, though W.E was nominated for best costume design. This means that there is a chance with the correct people to direct, Madonna could have some success. This comes down to the studio.

Madonna said in a statement, “It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.” There are some intangibles that possibly other directors could not fill. Madonna has had an incredible career as a singer. However, this is a huge swing at the fences for an artist that has little experience in the film field. Perhaps Juno scribe Diablo Cody can help steer the ship into the right direction, but either way Madonna is going all out for her next project.

The untitled film so far has gained support from Madonna fans, while critics of the choice are worried about her experience in this field. Though it is a risk, it could be worth it for Universal.

In this time of uncertainty, it is rather refreshing to see an artist putting all the chips in for one bet in the fifth decade of their career. While it might not be good, it is certain that it will be interesting to see.
