Universal Wins Bidding War For ‘Unicorn Executions’

Relax, no unicorns will be harmed in the making of this movie! It’s just the hilarious title of the new (soon to be published) book by Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen,  a collection of drawings and illustrations entitled Unicorn ExecutionsAnd Other Crazy Stuff My Kids Make Me Draw!

Nick Nesbitt is responsible for bringing the idea to comedy producer Scott Stuber (Ted, Identity Thief, and A Million Ways to Die in the West) and Bluegrass Films. With no storyline for the book consisting solely of illustrations, they approached SNL writer Simon Rich (the second youngest writer ever hired by SNL and the author of the Thurber-Prize nominated humor collection of Ant Farm: And Other Desperate Situations) who came up with a yet undisclosed theme to tie the illustrations together. This set off a bidding war between Universal, New Line and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, with Universal winning the film rights to the comedy package.

Rawson Thurber (We’re The Millers, Dodgeball) will direct, and Nick Nesbitt will supervise for Scott Stuber and Bluegrass.

A Steve Breen Editorial Cartoon

The actual book is being published in May 2014 by Skyhorse. The collection, drawn by Steve Breen, a Nationally syndicated cartoonist who is known for his political humor, includes such outlandish and horrifying illustrations as: Betty White punching out a Silverback Gorilla, Disney Princesses at 40, Mutant Presidents and, of course, Unicorn Executions.
