Universal Pictures already wants more from the wonderful world of Oz, especially after Wicked: For Good’s phenomenal opening box office debut.
Universal Pictures’ chief marketing officer, Michael Moses, recently told The Vulture that developments were “underway” to expand the world of the Wicked universe on screen. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote and composed all of the Wicked songs for the original musical, also expressed to The Ankler that he and Winnie Holzman, the musical’s book writer, have been working on ideas for a project related to the Wicked universe. Schwartz stated,
I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete, but there are other aspects that could be explored. Gregory Maguire, the original Wicked novelist, has several books, for example, But there’s another idea that Winnie and I are discussing: not a sequel, but an adjunct. Let me put it that way.
Wicked was adapted from Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Since that first release, Maguire has written eight sequel novels and this year released a childhood prequel titled Elphie: A Wicked Childhood. In 2026, Maguire is set to release Galinda’s version titled Galinda: A Charmed Childhood. There are unlimited ideas for Schwartz and Holzman to explore.
This news comes after Wicked: For Good set a new box-office opening record for a Broadway adaptation, grossing $223 million globally and $147 million domestically. Combined, both films are set to hit the $1 billion mark during Wicked: For Good’s subsequent weekend in theaters.
