There had been whispers of M. Night Shyamalan directing a new movie that took him back to his roots as a filmmaker, and now it looks like we finally know what that movie is. Low-budget and shrouded in secrecy, The Visit has been picked up by Universal Pictures for distribution next year, according to Deadline.
The Visit centers around two siblings’ visit to their grandparents’ house and the disturbing discovery they make about the grandparents and their activities. Universal picked up the low-budget film after Shyamalan wrote and directed the film using his own money, shooting it around his Pennsylvania home. Created with the help of Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, The Visit seems to have allowed Shyamalan to return to his low-budget roots and the movies he used to create before his big studio movies – After Earth and The Last Airbender being the most recent examples.
Blumhouse Productions have been doing well with their recent low-budget films, including Ouija most recently, which topped the weekend box office for two weeks in a row. The Visit is currently in post-production and the majority of the characters’ names have yet to be released along with what little is known about the plot.
The Visit was made for an estimated $5 million and is said to be a comedy/horror movie. It is set for release September 11, 2015.
