Universal Negotiating With Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, And Tim Story For A Third ‘Ride Along’ Film

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in Universal Pictures' 'Ride Along' (2014)

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are possibly teaming up once again for a brand new Ride Along film. The third installment in the ongoing comedy series is currently squaring away the return of the actor duo, along with securing a writer and a producer.

Originally released in 2014, the first Ride Along follows James, a high school security guard trying to win over his girlfriend’s brother Ben, a no-nonsense police detective. In an attempt to win him over, James goes on a ride along with Ben, hoping it’ll be a good chance to prove his case to marry Ben’s sister. But he bites off far more than he can chew, as the ride along gets them involved deep in the criminal underworld, with the two of them having to rely on each other to get out of it.

Ride Along managed to generate a strong presence at the box office upon release. Hitting theaters in January of that year, it opened to $41 million in its first weekend, and would go on to make $134 million domestically, per BoxOfficeMojo. The gross was high enough to warrant a sequel in 2016, which came in just shy of the first film financially.  The Hollywood Reporter noted that parent company Universal is currently trying to square away the return of the major Ride Along talents. Reportedly, talks are underway for both Ice Cube and Hart to appear, but no confirmation is given yet.

The acting duo isn’t the only one Universal is hoping to get back. They’re also currently negotiating with Tim Story to come back and direct the third film. Story already directed the first two Ride Along films, but he’s also co-directed several Kevin Hart comedy specials, including What Now? and Laugh At My Pain. Other directorial credits for Story include 2005’s Fantastic Four, The Blackening, and Taxi.
