Have no fear, fans of collegiate a capella – The Barden Bellas are slated to return to the big screen once again. After the phenomenal box office performance of this year’s Pitch Perfect 2, Universal has given the go-ahead for a third installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
According to sources, Kay Cannon, who penned the first two films, is in talks to script the new sequel. No word on casting has been released as of yet, so it will be interesting to see if the film’s standout actresses, Anna Kendrick (Into the Woods) and Rebel Wilson (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb), can be worked into the storyline, considering that college is normally a four-year affair. Complicating matters, the main actresses were reportedly not locked in for a third film, but sources say that Hailee Steinfeld (Barley Lethal) – who joined the franchise in the second film – was already attached to a third if it came to fruition.
Also a question mark is whether co-star Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise), who was instrumental in getting Pitch Perfect 2 made as both a director and producer, will join the sequel, and in what capacity.
